Academic text checks
AI Essay Detector for Papers and Personal Statements
Paste an essay, paper, or personal statement into this AI essay detector. Slop or Not compares the English passage with patterns learned from millions of human and AI samples, then returns a probability for closer review. Online, the pasted text first goes to Numen's server for a hidden-character scan, is processed in memory, and is discarded with the response, so nothing is stored. The separate AI check runs on Numen's private Mac server, and the text is deleted after processing. The iPhone, iPad, and Mac apps run both checks on-device.
Catches 99.5% of AI text at a 5% false-positive rate, scored by RAID, the public benchmark, not by us.
Paste a paragraph or a whole thesis. The iPhone and Mac apps have no word cap and no monthly word budget.
What it checks
What Can an AI Essay Detector Tell You?
Language patterns associated with LLM-written academic prose
Sentence and paragraph regularity across a full passage
Hidden Unicode characters found before submission, with a cleaned copy available after the verdict
Good Uses
- Reviewing a paper that shifts tone or complexity without treating the score as proof
- Checking a personal statement before submission for passages that sound generated
- Comparing detector output with citations, drafts, and the assignment brief during human review
Limits to Know
- A false positive is possible, especially in formulaic or heavily edited academic writing
- Mixed human and AI editing can blur the writing patterns the model reads
- A score cannot prove authorship or justify a grade or disciplinary decision by itself
FAQ
AI Essay Detector Questions
Can an AI essay detector prove who wrote a paper?
No. The detector reports whether the English writing resembles patterns in AI-generated text. It cannot identify an author, reconstruct how the paper was drafted, or prove misconduct.
How accurate is this AI essay detector?
On RAID, the public AI-text-detection benchmark (ACL 2024), the model caught 99.5% of AI-generated text at a 5% false-positive rate across 11 generator models, 8 domains, and 11 adversarial attacks. No benchmark turns one result into proof, so review the paper and its context.
What should a teacher do after a positive result?
Read the flagged paper closely, compare it with earlier drafts, citations, and the assignment brief, then ask the student about the work. Do not assign a penalty from one detector score.
Does readability prove that an essay is AI-written?
No. Readability measures sentence and word difficulty, not authorship. The native app reports readability beside the AI result so you can spot a change in level, but it remains a separate clue to review against the assignment and earlier drafts.
Does my essay leave the browser?
The pasted text first goes to Numen's server for a hidden-character scan, is processed in memory, and is discarded with the response, so nothing is stored. The separate AI check runs on Numen's private Mac server. The text is not shared with third-party AI providers and is deleted after processing. The iPhone, iPad, and Mac apps run both checks on-device.
Run the Next Check on Your iPhone or Mac
The Slop or Not app checks images and text on-device, so nothing you check ever leaves your device.
